The AP is reporting that NOAA is claiming a record 312 tornadoes in a 24 hour period on April 27-28, 2011. This would smash the old record of 148 tornadoes in a 24 hour span back during the Super Outbreak on April 3-4, 1974... This sounds impossible to me, especially since the SPC's page only has 263 tornado reports for 4/27/11 and 14 tornado reports for 4/28/11. Something isn't right with 312? I wonder where that number is coming from? Here is the story either way:
