A significant tornado outbreak occurred in the Mississippi Delta 41 years ago today. There were nine tornadoes in the MS Delta, including a F-5, two F-4's, and one F-3. Unfortunately, 110 people died in MS alone. 123 people total during the outbreak (11 Louisiana, 2 in North Carolina). From a chasing standpoint, the Delta is very similar to the Great Plains. It's actually probably my favorite place to chase. If I was alive, I would have gone after this event for sure. I'll leave several links below about this historic tornado outbreak... Enjoy!

The Dangers of Chasing
Here is a great essay by Chuck Doswell on the dangers of chasing, specifically with tornado chasing. I agree with this 100%. When it comes to hurricane chasing, driving would still be the #1 danger in my eyes without a doubt. Obviously, lightning is a very minimal risk with hurricanes, but storm surge is NOTHING to mess with. It will destroy everything in its path and will kill you quick!

Invest 90L
We have an invest (90L) on Super Bowl Sunday! While rare, this does happens from time to time. On Groundhog Day 1952, a tropical storm struck South Florida, as the NWS in Miami recorded a wind gust of 68mph. I'll leave some links below about this rare tropical storm...

1/28/1922: "Knickerbocker" Snowstorm
RT @wxhistorian 1/28/1922: The “Knickerbocker” storm dumped 28" of snow on Washington DC in 32 hr (city's worst).
Today is the 90th anniversary of the biggest snowstorm in Washington DC history (recorded). 28" of snow fell in DC, even though there were higher reports nearby. Here are several links talking about this historic storm. I will also include two links to video I shot during the back to back Washington DC Nor'easter/Blizzard in February 2010. At my location I had 27/28" follow by 12/13" in a 5-6 day period. Pretty amazing!

The Day it Snowed in Miami
Today marks the 35th anniversary of the day it snowed in Miami! Funny enough, back on January 9th, 2010 when I was visiting my parents in Coral Gables, there were a few reports of very light snow flurries across Miami-Dade county. I saw maybe a flake or two fly, but nothing official was recorded. Morning lows were near freezing, which is pretty darn rare for Miami. I believe the all time record low is officially 27 degrees? I'll leave some screen captures I grabbed from the news that day below...
I'm also going to leave two links talking about this historic event. The first is from local 10 in Miami, and chief meteorologist Trent Aric. Trent and I went to school together at Mississippi State, so I know him well. He put together a cool video blog talking about the setup that brought some light snow to South Florida. Clearing The Valdez Snow
